Holbox Island (also known as Isla Holbox) is an intriguing piece of land surrounded by water situated in the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. To reach this impressive paradise, one must travel to the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula, which offers close to 12 kilometers of land to explore. Separating Holbox Island from the mainland is a shallow lagoon that serves as residence for a wide range of colorful characters, such as flamingos, pelicans, and other feathered welcoming committee members.
The fishing village of Holbox Island once centered on the waters surrounding the land until tourists slowly discovered this remotely positioned Mexican gem. Today, the tourist services offered on the island have provided extended employment for some of the locals in the area. The establishment of beach hotels and the offering of tours and other tourist activities have created other means for the community to thrive. The island hasn’t gained the attention like other tourist sights about Mexico, but many adventure seekers have caught wind of Holbox because of the increasingly popular activity of whale shark watching. The island also offers a booming fishing industry that has attracted many who claim this hobby as their own.
To reach Holbox Island, you may hitch a ride aboard a ferry, which departs from the mainland town of Chiquila. To arrive at the island by air, a small airline called Aerosaab has been established, which offers flight tours of the area when leaving from Cancun. A small airstrip greets visitors who have taken advantage of the Cessna aircraft, which seats five. As far as traveling throughout the island, you should know hardly any cars are found in the vicinity. Most of the inhabitants, as well as visiting guests come and go as they please with the help of mopeds and golf carts.
When looking for a place to stay on the island, there are a handful of decent lodging selections, such as Villas Delfines, which provides visitors with a spacious beach bungalow with large porch included. Additional features include cross ventilation, thatched roof, and helpful mosquito netting. Access to a pool, tasty eatery, and soothing surroundings are also offered.
The best time to plan a trip to Holbox Island is often dictated by the habits of the more than hundred whale sharks that pass through the surrounding waters. Tourists often flock to the island from the months of May to September to catch sight of the giant creatures that have actually earned a reputation for being gentle despite their name. Even when boat tours and snorkelers cross paths with the whale sharks, they meander about the surface of the water without a care.
The whale sharks are much larger than the sharks you see in the movie, Jaws. They can reach lengths close to 60 feet. This particular breed of shark doesn’t seem to attack or cause harm unless provoked, and for the most part, they stick to feasting on plankton and other small organisms.
When not exploring the beauty of the local whale sharks, tourists also take the time to bask in the warmth of the sun while sinking their toes into the sandy beaches of Holbox Island. Surrounding the fine sand, shallow waters reveal a dull green tint that differs from some of the brilliant shades of blue the Caribbean is known for. Overall, the island is a worthy getaway fit for anyone in need of serious rest and relaxation.
